Genius Lagotto Kennel

The idea was born after my father, Mijo, a passionate mushroom forager, watched a show featuring Lagotti searching for truffles with our renowned forager, Roman Božac, and found it incredibly fascinating. After a brief discussion, we set out to find a puppy, and thus began our story, which has now lasted over 10 years.

Our first pair of Lagottos joined our family in late 2013. The first to arrive was Alba from the Lagottos Peak kennel, owned by the Petrovčić family. Shortly after, Fitzroy from the top Slovenian kennel Ocrina joined us. Fitzroy is the father of our dogs, Muffin and Khaleesi, along with their beautiful mother “Contessa Lago di Fortuna,” who are the foundation of our future breeding program. Currently, our kennel is home to 7 adult Lagottos who are equal members of our family.

So far, our kennel has produced 14 litters, representing a wealth of breeding experience. We place great importance on the pedigree that every puppy from all 14 of our litters possesses. A pedigree is a document that shows the lineage of the dog over several generations, reflecting the effort and dedication of breeders who have devoted their lives to the advancement of this wonderful breed. Therefore, when purchasing a puppy, it is crucial to request a pedigree, as it guarantees responsible breeding.

When it comes to the health of the breed, we pay close attention to genetic testing. All our dogs undergo genetic tests. Although the current situation is relatively good, the popularity of the Lagotto in recent years has led to overproduction, which poses risks for the breed’s future, as overproduction often undermines the quality of a particular breed.

Our goal in breeding for the coming years is to enhance and improve the quality of our puppies. We aim to keep this beautiful breed healthy so that they can continue to bring joy to the many families who own our wonderful dogs from the Genius Lagotto kennel!
